Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, are safety systems that are designed to work together to enhance vehicle safety. ADAS alerts the driver to potential problems and assists in avoiding collisions. The driver assistance system also includes features such as automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
Different types of ADAS systems
- Adaptive – this type of system can change or adapt to situations occurring in the surrounding environment
- Examples: Adaptive cruise control, head lights, light control
- Automated – this system can perform functions that a driver cannot safely carry out
- Examples: Automatic braking and automatic parking
- Monitoring – this system uses sensors and cameras to observe the area surrounding the car while it is on the road and prevent accidents from occurring
- Examples: Blind spot, pedestrian and proximity monitors
- Warning – this system alerts the driver to potential problems in their own driving or the driving of others in order to prevent collisions.
- Examples: Driver drowsiness detection, Collision avoidance system, Forward collision warning
Does my car have ADAS?
If your windshield is damaged and needs replacement, and your car does have ADAS, be sure to check with the original manufacturer and figure out what systems are in the windshield that need to be reinstalled. The windshield is an important part of the performance of your ADAS systems and should be repaired or replaced immediately.
Examples of ADAS
The Blind Spot Warning Light can be found on your side view mirror. This warning light will alert you of a vehicle or other obstruction when you begin to signal a turn. The monitor can also detect other cars as you shift lanes on an interstate or back out of a parking space.
A car radar system detects traffic issues that you cannot. Using applications such as blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and cross traffic interference at intersections, the radar is designed to keep you safe while behind the wheel.
Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure & Adaptive Cruise Control are implanted to try and prevent collisions. The goal of these ADAS is to minimize accidents, bringing your car to a halt if necessary, and assisting the driver while changing lanes. Adaptive cruise control will automatically adjust your cruising speed to keep a safe distance from the other cars.
Light sensors
If your lights turn on or off automatically depending on how light it is outside, your car is equipped with light sensors. The windshield sensors are normally located either next to the rain sensor, behind the rearview mirror or on the dash near the edge of the windshield.
How does a light sensor help my driving?
The light sensors are there to support the driver’s vision and make the headlights more efficient. The light sensor system will automatically turn on the car’s headlights when it gets dark outside.
What happens if my windshield is damaged?
Depending on the amount of damaged done to the windshield you may need to re-install your light sensor system in order to ensure that it will function properly. If there is something wrong with your light sensor system, the lights may not turn on when they are needed, or turn on when they are not needed.
Rain sensors
The rain sensor is normally located next to the light sensor. This system turns the windshield wipers automatically by detecting rain on the windshield.
How does my windshield know it’s raining?
Your vehicle is able to measure how much rain is on the windshield and can speed up the windshield wipers according to the amount of rain it detects. The sensor itself is located behind the vehicle’s rearview mirror and wired through the roof.
What happens when your windshield needs repair?
If the rain sensor is still functioning properly then you need to let the technician know so they can re-install it after repairing your windshield.
How does the rain sensor help with driving?
The rain sensor on your windshield helps keep you safe as well as other drivers by taking care of one thing that you would potentially be distracted by.
Having rain sensing windshields and automatic wipers allows you to completely focus on the road ahead of you, making sure you stay safe in anything from a drizzle to a down pour,
What is a heads-up display?
A head-up display projects images on the windshield so that the driver does not have to look away from the road. Some displays include speedometers navigational indicators, and tachometers and are connected to the in-vehicle computers.
What are the benefits of having a heads-up display?
The main benefit of having a HUD in your vehicle is not having to take your eyes off the road when driving to get necessary information about your driving and the vehicle. This can lower the risk of accidents occurring.
Heads-up Display and Replacement
If your windshield is damaged you will need to get your heads-up display properly re-installed as well.
What is night vision? Does my car have night vision systems?
Car night vision will help you stay aware of anything out of reach of your headlights.
The infrared and thermal sensors are typically mounted in the vehicle’s grille and display images in the screen in the center console or dashboard.
How does night vision on your car help?
Night vision allows you to be completely confident in any nighttime scenario, regardless of the conditions. Car night vision uses multiple sensors to determine the distance of objects ahead. When driving heavy rain and snow, it is important to know how much distance you will need to come to a complete stop. The night vision sensors will help to keep you as safe as possible while driving.
Car night vision systems and replacement
Night vision sensors are mounted in different places on a vehicle, depending on the year, make, and model. If your vehicle’s night vision sensor is mounted in the windshield, you may need to check the wiring should your windshield need replacing. Regardless let your repair technician know so that you can have your sensors properly replaced.
